The problem

Children with additional learning needs can feel overwhelmed by loud, unpredictable moments at school or at home, and it is not always easy for them, or the adults around them, to notice it building up in time to help.

The solution

calm-corner gives a child a simple, visual way to check in on how they are feeling, then guides them straight to a short breathing exercise, quiet sounds, or their own personal safe space of calming pictures and words. Parents and teachers can set up a childs own calming routine in advance, so it is ready exactly when it is needed.

Monetisation service

Free for one child profile with 3 calming activities. School or Family Plan at £4.99/month unlocks unlimited child profiles, a full activity library, and simple progress notes a parent can share with a teacher or SENCO.

Ziyad’s story

Building a Calmer Corner for Kids Who Need It

The Spark

Ziyad noticed that for some children, especially those with additional learning needs, a loud classroom or a change in routine can turn into overwhelming big feelings very quickly, and it is not always easy for the adults around them to catch it early enough to help. He wanted to build something that put a simple, calming tool directly in a childs own hands.

Building It For Real

At PsyntaxLabs Academy, Ziyad is turning that idea into calm-corner: an app where a child taps how they are feeling and is guided straight to a short breathing exercise, quiet sounds, or their own personal safe space of calming pictures and words. He has spent his first weeks learning Python fundamentals, and is now in the Make It a Real App phase, using AI tools thoughtfully to keep the design simple and calm rather than busy, which matters even more for an app built for children who find sensory overload hard.

  • Design for a real, sensitive audience, not just for what looks impressive.
  • Keep every screen simple and predictable, on purpose.
  • Use AI as a genuine design tool once the fundamentals were solid, not a shortcut around them.

What's Next

calm-corner is still taking shape, but the goal is already clear: giving a child a calming tool that is theirs alone to use, whenever they need it.
